VCDX Basic-Advanced-Expert Questions box included topics I wanted to be able to answer really quickly at first, then go into detail if I was asked for further explanations.
This idea is from this excellent blog post from VCDX90 Josh Odgers: http://www.joshodgers.com/2014/03/05/vcdx-defence-essentials-part-1-preparing-for-the-design-defence/
I actually recommend reading everything on Josh’s blog on VCDX. Great content and advice I read multiple times.
Also hidden gem for the beginner architect is the Architectural Decisions part of his blog. http://www.joshodgers.com/architectural-decisions/ Great for getting into that architect mindset.
Here are some of the boxes from my defense slides:
All of the question had answers that were very undescriptive.
Lets use vSphere HA Core as an example: protect against, heartbeating, master/slave, FDM/HOSD/vCenter, 5 states, communication ports and more on those lines. Not real answers just a bunch of words from a specific skill update OneNote document. I’ll cover that in the next section of this blog series.
With the skill update section and those short answers I found it easier to answer them if needed.
I also integrated those short answers into the defense slide notes section that had the “transcript” of what I wanted to mention on each slide. A separate section regarding the slide transcript will be covered in the blog series.
Here is an example from the notes section and how the Basic-Advanced-Expert level knowledge was integrated into the text:
To start with the Virtual Datacenter Logical design, the main decision were creating performance, availability and recovery tiers for VMs to fulfill business requirement 7, there were 3 distinct cluster types based on location a workloads, vSphere HA was used for availability (protect against, heartbeating, master/slave, FDM/HOSD/vCenter, 5 states, communication ports) with percentage based admission control using multiple isolation addresses for redundancy and advanced settings to control overcommitment ratio during HA events, vSphere DRS was enabled on all clusters (Aggregates, optimizes distribution, uphold affinity, vMotion, Calculates imbalance 5minute, Current/Target HostLoadDeviation, weigh cost benefit, mingoodness, list, balanced), all vCenters were configured with Multisite SSO and linked mode (Identity mangement, 3 deployment options, 4 componenents;STS,SSO server,Lookup and Directory services on 117711)
